The Artist
Betty Dion was drawn to become a resident of Sedona, a snowbird from Canada. A former watercolorist, Betty was challenged to paint the southwest. To capture the vibrant colors, light, shadows and atmosphere of the southwest she was pushed to increasingly move towards acrylic and abstraction. Inspired by the awesome landscape and energy of Sedona, and looking for fellow plein air painters, Betty founded the Sedona Plein Air Network in 2017.
Betty is a member of the Sedona Plein Air Network, the Sedona Arts Center, the Plein Air Painters of Northern Arizona, the Arizona Plein Air Painters and the Northern Arizona Watercolor Society.
Betty’s work has been shown in art galleries from Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia and Arizona.
Artist Statement
Betty’s acrylic paintings are inspired by the lights, shadows and shapes found in the Southwest. Weekly excursions to paint plein air have provided an opportunity for Betty to develop a painterly practices of fresh loose and bold brushstrokes. While Betty explores the landscape, she analyzed how the light falls upon the shapes producing simple volumes that can be translated into her strong stylized rich values. Betty’s practice of painting quickly results in a fresh loose impressionistic personal style.
